Accessibility

Alongside is built for people other apps have let down, and that has to include people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, larger text or less motion.

What we aim for

This website and the Alongside: Move app aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.

This statement covers this website and the app at app.buildnewhabits.co.uk. Alongside: Move is still being tested, so both are changing week by week.

This website

  • Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, starts with a link to skip to the main content, and shows where the keyboard is.
  • The rotating lines on the home page have a Pause button, and screen readers get all of them as a plain list instead.
  • Tabs (the coach's lines, the four people) work with the arrow keys and say which one is selected.
  • Text and background colours were checked for contrast.
  • Tables have proper row and column headings.

The app

  • Every screen is checked automatically, on both Free and the Plan, at normal text and at 1.45 and 2 times the size: nothing may run off the side of a phone, and no word may be split.
  • The app follows your phone's Reduce motion setting.
  • Every button and switch has a name a screen reader can read, and switches read their description with them.
  • Exercise pictures have a written description of the position.
  • No screen asks you to read more than about 60 words before its first button.

What isn't right yet

  • Neither the website nor the app has had an independent accessibility audit, or been tested by disabled people. Both are planned before the app is offered more widely.
  • The home page has a placeholder where a photograph will go.
  • The mailing list sign-up is switched off until it is connected, so it cannot be used by anyone yet.
  • Some exercise pictures are being redrawn because they don't show the position clearly.

Tell us

If something on the website or in the app is hard to use, or you need anything in a different format, email hello@buildnewhabits.co.uk. Say what you were trying to do and, if you can, what you were using (a screen reader, a keyboard, a larger text size). We aim to reply within 5 working days.
